Since I have not one but two characters who are over twenty years old (Seriously, twenty!), I've been researching what the canon says happened before the first movie. Since I'm expecting that my characters will be asked all sorts of questions and such, I thought I'd post what I've found here just in case anyone else is interested and in case anyone wants to say "No! Not that!" to anything, mostly just some basic facts that I think need to be settled. I don't really care about the details much, actually, I just want to have something to say when questions about the past crop up. I've focused mainly on the characters who have died at this point, since I assume that whoever plays the living characters will want to fill in the gaps themselves and I don't want to stifle creativity. Anyway, here's what I came up with:
Mohatu is the name of Simba's great-grandfather and Mufasa's grandfather. Apparently it's never stated whether he was Ahadi or Uru's father - see my questions after this for more on that... Apparently he was widely considered to be the best lion king ever - the brightest star in the sky is him. He had a very long reign, and apparently it snowed the night he died. His mate's name is never stated.
Ahadi is Mufasa and Scar's father. He's the one who invited Rafiki to stay in the pridelands, and Rafiki in turn came up with the idea of there being a majordomo bird to help him out.
Uru is Mufasa and Scar's mother. She appears mostly as a name in the canon.
I'm not going to bother saying anything about Mufasa, we all know him. But apparently Scar's original name was Taka. And he got his scar because he tried to trick Mufasa into messing with a buffalo to humiliate and/or hurt him, but it backfired and when the herd attacked him he got a horn to the face - Ahadi tried to tell him to take it as a reminder to not be reckless, and Taka replied that he wanted to be called Scar from then on, though I rather think that he took it as a reminder to be more careful about his plans to kill his brother.
And now I've got some questions I'd like to hear other's thoughts on:
-What's Mohatu's mate's name? I can possibly avoid ever answering that, but it'd be nice to have an answer.
Edit: Looks like we're going with Ayashe; see the third question.
-Was Mohatu Ahadi or Uru's father? The only reason why I'm asking instead of insisting that he was Ahadi's is because, while Ahadi is specifically referred to as the Lion King in the canon, Uru spends pretty much the entire book she's mentioned in away looking for a better water source. That might make one wonder if she's a particularly devoted queen, or is she actually the one in charge similar to how it would be after TLK2 with Kiara? Interesting possibility... Mohatu would definitely be the father of whichever of them is in charge.
Edit: Looks like we like the idea of Uru having been the heir.
-Speaking of Uru, apparently Akashe is the more preferred name for Ahadi's mate in the fan-fiction. I personally like bowing to canon over everything, but does anyone else have any strong feelings on this?
Edit: Looks like Uru is the favored name, but see the first question.
-How did Ahadi die? Apparently he's dead by TLK, but nobody seems to say why. Could have been old age, but then again Scar is his son. But if Scar was involved, he definitely didn't get caught. Incidentally, I discovered that Scar tried to kill Rafiki at one point (by poisonous snake)!
Edit: Looks like we like old age. So unexciting, but yeah...
-Also, apparently a popular explanation for Scar's scar is that he made advances towards Sarabi and either she or Mufasa caused the scar because of that. But again, I like to bow to the canon and I personally feel that this alternative explanation is a little cliche - must everything be about lust? But again, any strong feelings?
Edit: Having heard nothing against this, I'm assuming we'll stick with the canon.
And by the way, I have a possible explanation for the elephant graveyard, which I doubt anyone will have a problem with, but I'll stick it in here just for possible comment: Basically, at some point near the end of Mohatu's reign there was a huge clan war among the elephants at the site. This would be within Kibibi's lifetime, but the vast majority of the other animals would only have heard stories. Normally RL elephants will crush the tusks and bury the bones of elephants they find (and they'll even try to figure out which elephant it was by feeling the skull, would you believe it!), but in this case the elephants decided to leave them there as a reminder of how bad war is and that they should seek for peaceful solutions. Now this would make all the bones in the graveyard rather old, but it's not unrealistic to say that they'd still be there if there really were a huge number of elephants killed - given the amount of bone per elephant it'd take a really long time for the scavenger types to eat them because they're simply overwhelmed by the scale of it, and if they'd been there for that long they'd now be rather unappetizing anyway, even for hyenas.
Anyway, I think I'm done here: Commence questioning, commenting, suggesting, egging, insulting, wiggling, and anything else you feel the need to do.
