Given the sad status of TLK-based MU's nowadays, I find myself missing RPing on mucks that have followed TLK and/or it's sequel. I have RPed on and been a wiz/head wiz on many and would like to run one again, but only if there is a call. So please cast your vote today! I think it's now time to lock this poll, but keep on posting.

I voted yes, but only to a MUCK done right. There have been so many poorly-done, abandoned, or otherwise 'fallen from grace' TLK-based MU*s at this point ( here is a list of several) that I think it's left a bad taste in a lot of players' mouths when they hear 'new TLK MUCK' because of how overused, overplayed, and generally overdone the genre is. Of the two African-based MUCKs I know of that are still around, Sunrise has been up and down and is indefinitely on hiatus, and TLK MUCK is, well, no longer a true TLK MUCK (I've been on there since 2001 and have yet to see any active FC story or RP at all, despite it being named for the movie). That said, I have long desired a quality place to roleplay the storylines following the original film(s) -- specifically one set before/during the second film, which allows for both the history of the movies to be considered IC history as well, but also for an open-ended story to be played out from thereafter -- even if it turns out to be not necessarily entirely canon as IC events unfold. Basically, if yet another iteration of a frequently-used genre is to be created, then it should offer something that other similarly-themed games don't...in this case, perhaps it's just the presence of the movie characters we all know and love. Of course, keep in mind that even that won't necessarily guarantee a huge playerbase in this day and age, and keeping FCs actively cast isn't always the easiest job (speaking from experience). But hey, if there's support and interest, then what the heck. All right, I've rambled on enough for now...there's my two and a half cents, take it with a grain of salt.

I agree with Zira, of course the question about how it's 'done right' is up for debate. I do agree that TLK MUCK and the other TLK-based MU* have become pretty dead in terms of FC RP and whatnot. On the other hand, I also feel that basing a MUCK entirely on FCs and slaving players to a single plot is also a bad idea. I rather enjoyed TLK way back in the mid-90s when the plot had the FCs but was still open enough to allow interaction with other non-FC characters before the non-FC bit went out of control and took over.
I've also wanted to play in a world based on the original films, or at least partially inspired by them, maybe with some semi-FC characters slotted in to round things out a bit. The problem is attracting enough players to keep it viable unless a small, cozy MUCK just focusing on the Pridelands was your goal. It's difficult to get people interested in 'yet another' TLK MUCK, as Zira pointed out, especially in this day and age of MMORPGs.
The other possibility is trying to resurrect the FCs on TLK MUCK itself, the wizstaff has said that they wouldn't be adverse to the idea if they got a dedicated group of players interested in taking up the parts and creating RP. Of course that requires a lot of responsibility on the part of those taking the FCs.

Of course that requires a lot of responsibility on the part of those taking the FCs. My personal, if somewhat biased, issue with this is that I've asked different wizards a couple of times now about the possibility of eventually moving the FC plot forward and allowing for at least the first generation of TLK2's FCs to be applied for as well (which, with their latest casting having Simba and Nala currently as adults, Zira would most certainly be around by now, if not her first cub Nuka as well), and was outright denied the opportunity to even have an application/interview of mine be entertained as a possibility, nor would they let me create her as a non-FC for the sake of being able to interact with the then-still-active FC characters. To me, it feels like they're keeping the FCs stuck in some between-movie purgatory (and for a while, they were actually physically stuck in a 'FC Sandbox' area that wouldn't even let them interact with other OCs) that doesn't allow for them to really do anything substantial (as is evidenced by the fact that the only semi-active FCs left from this last batch are Nala and Shenzi). Not to mention their last set of rules for FCs involved an outrageously high level of standards. Even if it requires a bit of work, I'd much rather see a more open environment for TLK-based RP -- and, like you said, I'd certainly want for there to be non-FC based prides/groups/plots about as well...I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to have at least one OC pride existing alongside the FC Pridelands to start with. Anyway, at this point I'm just dreaming of the possibility of playing Zira once again (or, if it's set after her death, her daughter Vitani), even if it is just a 'small, cozy MUCK' for those of us who still enjoy exploring the possibilities of further RP involving our favorite movie characters. Hopefully we'll get some more responses either way on the matter soon.

The wizards appear to not want FCs unless people are going to play them consistently. They claim that there are players who don't want or don't care about the FCs so they see no reason to add them. They also claim that with all the players that have taken the FCs and then quit or left, forcing either new characters to take on the roles or a complete restart that it's easier to just ignore them.
Tego at least did say that if enough players got interested and were willing to competently play the FCs without quitting that they'd consider opening them up for application again.
However, I do agree, though that it'd be a lot easier to have just a small, cozy MUCK for those of us that want to play and experience the FCs on our own terms and further their stories. It seems like the general setup of TLK MUCK itself has strayed too far from the general movie plot and has become a generic African MUCK with only the Pridelands as any real sign that it ever was based on the movies.

You guys have pretty much covered most of the bases when it comes to TLK Mucks leaving me with nothing to really add that we don't already know about. However, I do believe if done right another good be made. We've done 'the first movie' many times, but we've never really touched on the second. If another muck is made then I'd suggest it be based around the second or even after it works just as fine; leaving room for some creativity. (A possible pole could determine what time-line could be implemented.)
I certainly would not be disappointed if nothing becomes of this idea. Other ideas can always be thought up to fill in the hole.

I had the pleasure of playing Nala on TLKM the last time the FCs were actually used and I really miss playing her. I wasn't even allowed to apply for her with this new set of wizards.
On the topic of a smaller, intimate MU for a few players, would anyone be interested in having a closed MU, bringing in players who would be interested along the way? I've always felt this was a somewhat good idea, provided there was enough people interested and willing. I'd prefer an open MU, with at least two other prides besides the Pridelands, plus the Graveyard hyenas and other denizens of the lands.

I'd much prefer an 'open' MUCK to a 'closed' one -- even if it stays small (though hopefully interest will grow), at least the knowledge of it being an alternative option out there would be better than requiring people to be invited or whatever.
Sunrise seems to be stuck in a half-a-year-long rut, so if we're all in support of at least trying this out, I second Irrila's idea of creating a new poll -- one for where in the timeline we should start. From what everyone's said here so far, I think the general consensus is that we should focus on some time after the original movie, with Simba and Nala already adults. Beyond that, our specific options might be something like:
- Right after the first movie (King Simba and Queen Nala; Kiara and Kovu still cubs) - Sometime during the second movie (to allow for alternative events from the canon to happen; ie, what if Kovu doesn't fall in love with Kiara and still tries to kill Simba?) - Right after the second movie (King Kovu and Queen Kiara; allows for a completely open slate from this point on)
There are pros and cons to each option (for example, the last one has the most freedom, but the least time to dedicate to the LK FCs), but I imagine this could all be discussed in the poll thread.

I certainly would like to see another African realm game other than Lion King Muck. Some of the prides/groups/relationships there are really well established and set in stone, so it would be nice to have a game where the players have a bit more influence on things, or to set a new tone to characters and such.
Personally, I'm not much of a Feature Character player, myself. I prefer to explore my own characters rather than those established by the movies. So, I don't have much comment on timeline or anything in regards to FCs. I can work an original character in regardless of what time it's decided to have the Muck.
My only comment is this - I've seen a lot of people over the years try to start up new Lion King games. Most of the time, they die out very quickly, or never get off the ground. If you really want to get people interested, show that you have a core group of staff dedicated to the project and ready to get it up and running in a short period of time. I'd say, if you want the best results, from the time the timeline is decided, it should be no more than three weeks to game opening. Otherwise, you really risk losing people who have been through this waiting game before. If it takes months to get a game off the ground, a lot of people will move on and dismiss it as just another one of those 'big ideas that never went anywhere'.

I am more than willing to help out with getting the MUCK set up, rooms built, policies worked out, et cetera as needed, and will be eager to apply for staff as soon as help is needed.

I hate to be the one to butt in with a short and sweet intro, but yes, I agree with Kiza. I've never played an FC on a MUCK before, but I'd definitely be interested in the role of Shenzi. I've played her before, just not through this medium. :] Also, I'd be glad to help out in whatever way too, just don't look at me for any programming help.

I can use all the help I can get. I've started to build (if I recall right, I have some of the Pride Lands done, mainly Pride Rock), I gotta say it's not my favorite thing to do. I'm just not good at it. So, anyone interested in helping, either for building, describing or staff, just send me a message and I'll get back to you.

I'm like a building fanatic.. or so that's what my friends say when they have me build their pre-designed mucks.
Anyhow, I'm all for helping out whether it be organization, groups.. whatever.

I'm more than a bit rusty as far as building goes, but I'm willing to do what I can if that's needed. I'm also up for talking about rules, discussing and writing news articles, plotlines and whatever else might be needed.
